Momma Knows Best: How Did Michael Jordan’s Mother Make Him Rich?
Converse was the leading shoe brand in the NBA’s early years.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
They supplied the NBA with all of its footwear and featured well-known athletes like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.
Despite his popularity, the young Michael Jordan did not have enough of a following to secure a contract with Converse.
Although Michael Jordan was a rising basketball star, his agent David Falk decided that a star needed a shoe because Michael Jordan was a star.
When Michael made his NBA debut, basketball was still very much a team sport in terms of both training and promotion.
Superstars like Larry Bird and Magic were well-known, but they didn’t have their own line of merchandise like modern athletes do.
Mike Jordan’s agent, David Falk, saw Michael as one of the tennis pros he represented, an individual superstar with their own branded merchandising.
Michael desired a meeting with Adidas, Converse’s next major competitor. However, Adidas was in financial trouble and couldn’t afford to pay Mike a contract.
Nike was his final option.
Mike…. was enraged. He refused to meet with this unidentified firm.
Mike, you see, was a competitor who aspired to be associated with the biggest names in sports merchandise, such as Converse or Adidas.
Mike was very close to his parents throughout his career, and his mother put her foot down and told him
“You should hold a meeting and at the very least listen to what they have to say.” He went ahead and met them despite his reservations.
When the biggest stars in the NBA were making $100,000 per year, Nike offered Michael a contract worth $250,000.
MJ quickly rose to fame and became a household name. As a result, his signature shoes, the Nike Air Jordan 1, became extremely popular.
Nike hoped to recoup $3 million in sales over the next two years. They sold 126 million dollars in shoes in their first year.
Four decades later, the Air Jordan 1 remains one of Nike’s best-selling shoes.
Michael then gained equity in the company, making him a billionaire today. Imagine if he had never agreed to meet with Nike…
Imagine if his mother had never put her foot down and forced him to attend the Nike meeting.
It appears that the old adage is correct.
Momma knows best.
Best,
Ludwig R.
