Nollywood actress and filmmaker Uzoamaka Power has revealed that her father’s negative perception of the acting profession made her fearful of pursuing her dream of becoming an actress.

Power made the revelation during an appearance on the Tea With Tay podcast, where she discussed the challenges she faced while growing up and her determination to build a career in the entertainment industry.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the actress explained that her father often criticised actresses for their dressing and lifestyles, questioning how they managed to combine acting with their university education.

She recalled that watching movies with him was sometimes uncomfortable because he frequently expressed disapproval of the women appearing on screen. His comments, she said, contributed to her fear of openly pursuing her ambition.

Power described her father’s perception of acting as similar to prostitution, adding that his concerns about the profession influenced how she viewed her own career aspirations at the time.

Despite these reservations, the filmmaker said she always had a strong belief that she would succeed in acting because it was something she genuinely loved doing.

She acknowledged that her father’s concerns stemmed from his desire to protect her and ensure she had a stable future. According to her, he believed that the entertainment industry could be financially uncertain and that securing a conventional office job would provide greater stability.

Beyond discussing her early struggles, Power also spoke about her confidence and how she has remained true to herself despite the opinions of others.

The actress maintained that she has never felt compelled to diminish herself to make others comfortable, explaining that she understands her strengths, weaknesses and areas where she needs to improve.

She added that she is willing to acknowledge her shortcomings and learn where necessary, stressing that remaining authentic to herself has always been important to her.

Power’s account highlights the personal and family-related challenges that aspiring entertainers can face when their career choices conflict with the expectations and beliefs of their loved ones.
