Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has refuted allegations of embezzling public funds during his time in office, stating he is prepared to swear on the Qur’an to prove his innocence.
Speaking on a Hausa program aired by Freedom Radio in Kaduna on the morning of October 1, El-Rufai emphasized that his intention in joining politics was to serve the people, not for personal financial gain. “I didn’t come into public service to steal or enrich myself,” he declared. “I was already content with what I had before becoming governor.”
He added, “I have always asked God to guide me in all I do, and I’m ready to swear with the Qur’an, alongside other past governors of Kaduna State, to affirm that I never took public funds. We have been accused of misappropriation, but no specific instances or evidence have been provided.”
El-Rufai also mentioned that his allies are being targeted, with many being summoned by the ICPC and EFCC, which he sees as an attempt to tarnish their reputations. He explained that he has entrusted the matter to God, praying for divine judgment on the issue.
These statements come in response to the Kaduna State House of Assembly’s indictment of his administration, accusing him of misappropriating over N423 billion during his eight-year tenure, allegations both he and his associates have consistently denied, labeling them as political witch-hunts.
