Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended the previous Thursday for allegedly breaching the Senate Standing Rules following her accusations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions had recommended a six-month suspension, which includes the forfeiture of her salary, allowances, and those of her legislative aides, along with the withdrawal of her security detail.
During the session, Senators Danjuma Goje (APC, Gombe Central) and Abdul Ahmed Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) proposed setting up a committee to address the issue and to conduct a vote of confidence in Akpabio. However, Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo) vehemently opposed the idea, arguing that reversing the suspension would weaken the Senate’s authority.
Akpabio Gains More Support
According to sources within the Senate, Senator Victor Umeh (Labour Party) also backed Akpabio and even suggested a vote of confidence in the Senate President.
“Goje, Ningi, and Dickson opposed the suspension. Goje and Ningi recommended forming a committee to resolve the Natasha issue and to hold a vote of confidence in Akpabio. However, Oshiomhole resisted any committee, stating that reversing the decision would portray the Senate as weak,” a source disclosed.
“Victor Umeh of LP also supported Akpabio and even proposed a Senate vote of confidence,” the source added.
Following deliberations, the Senate decided that Akpoti-Uduaghan would serve her full suspension, which commenced on March 6, 2025.
