The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the frequent collapses of Nigeria’s National Grid, describing them as a persistent issue in the country’s infrastructure.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Obi lamented that these recurring failures have caused significant setbacks and hardship for both households and businesses across the nation. He made his views known in a statement on Saturday, following the first grid collapse of 2025, which occurred just 11 days into the new year, leaving the country in widespread darkness.
This incident marks the 13th grid failure in 13 months, adding to the frustration of many Nigerians grappling with unreliable electricity.
Obi attributed the continuous collapses to the lack of genuine commitment from the country’s leaders toward national development. He urged the government to prioritize improvements in the power sector and other critical areas to alleviate the economic burdens on citizens.
“National grid collapse has sadly become a recurring decimal,” Obi stated. “Barely into the new year, we are already facing yet another major collapse. In 2024 alone, there were nearly a dozen such failures, each inflicting immeasurable hardship on Nigerians.
“Reports indicate that Nigeria has borrowed over $3.23 billion in the last four years to address electricity issues, yet the country struggles to produce more than 4,500 megawatts of power. This recurring failure raises serious questions about where these borrowed funds have been invested.
“The widespread corruption and lack of sincere commitment among leaders continue to impede our nation’s progress, leaving essential sectors like power in a perpetual state of crisis,” he added.
As he called for immediate and effective reforms, Obi emphasized that 2025 should serve as a fresh start for Nigeria to address its challenges and fulfill its potential.
“A New Nigeria remains possible,” he concluded.
