Golit stressed the foundational role of the military in nation-states, asserting that without security, a country cannot thrive, affecting industries, parliaments, and overall functionality. He urged the government to prioritize the welfare of security agency members, considering their valuable skills that could be exploited by insurgent groups if ignored.
The retired Air Commodore called for periodic reviews of welfare conditions for armed forces and security agency members, drawing attention to the long-standing Nigerian Armed Forces Act from the 70s that has seen no deliberate effort for updates. He suggested that, like in many other countries, retired individuals could contribute to various government services post-retirement, ensuring their continued assistance to the nation.
Air Commodore Danladi Bausa (retired), the newly elected association president, expressed gratitude to Chief Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa and Defence Minister Abubakar Badaru for their efforts in improving veterans’ welfare. He acknowledged steps taken by the officials to address the concerns of retirees, recognizing their ongoing commitment to veterans’ well-being.
Various advocacy groups, including the Coalition for Concerned Veterans and the Civil War Veterans, have consistently called for enhanced welfare, pension payments, and gratuities for retired military personnel.
