The national average cost for maintaining a healthy diet for an adult has been rising steadily, reaching ₦1,241 per person in June. Since January, the cost has increased consistently, with figures rising from ₦858 in January to ₦1,041 in May and ₦1,241 in June, marking a 19.2% rise over this period.

The NBS report notes that Ekiti, Ogun, and Osun states have the highest costs at ₦1,640, ₦1,599, and ₦1,557 respectively. Conversely, Katsina, Kano, and Jigawa have the lowest costs, with figures of ₦878, ₦926, and ₦937. The South-West Zone also leads at ₦1,545 per day, followed by the South-South Zone at ₦1,376 per day.

The report attributes the increase in costs to higher prices for vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and starchy foods. The Cost of a Healthy Diet (CoHD) has risen faster than general and food inflation in recent months. However, the CoHD is measured differently from the Consumer Price Index (CPI), as it includes fewer items and is calculated on a daily basis.
