The court directed that Kanu be held in a āprotected custodial centre,ā ruling out the Kuje Correctional Centre due to its history of security breaches and persistent threats. Legal representatives confirmed on Friday that the convict had been moved to Sokotoāan outcome his counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, described as troubling, noting that the distance places Kanu far from his lawyers, relatives, and supporters.
Ejimakor urged concerned groups, particularly the Igbo community, to remain calm as legal avenues were being explored to challenge the transfer. Although officials at the Sokoto Custodial Centre declined to verify whether Kanu had arrived, independent observations indicated an unusually heavy security presence around the premises on Friday. Armed operatives were seen strategically positioned within and around the facility, and witnesses reported an influx of military trucks entering the area.
A resident, who requested anonymity, remarked that the level of military deployment was unprecedented. Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Jane Osuji, confirmed that Kanu remains in the agencyās custody but withheld details regarding his precise location, citing operational protocols.
