The BRICS alliance, known for its economic prowess and global influence, is gearing up for another round of expansion at its upcoming annual summit in 2024. This follows a similar move made last year when six countries were invited to join, with five accepting the offer.

Amid the alliance’s ongoing de-dollarization efforts and its increasing global prominence, the potential inclusion of Nigeria in 2024 would mark a significant geopolitical development. Minister Tuggar has hinted at Nigeria’s exploration of joining the alliance, signaling the country’s interest in being part of the bloc’s expansion efforts.

If Nigeria were to join the BRICS alliance, it would play a pivotal role in the bloc’s second expansion phase. Last year, the alliance extended invitations to several countries, with Argentina being the sole nation to decline. For Nigeria, joining BRICS would further strengthen its economic ties with Russia, a relationship Tuggar emphasized as crucial in the country’s bid for membership.

As the BRICS alliance considers its options for expansion, Nigeria’s inclusion is likely to be on the agenda, along with numerous other nations expressing interest in joining the bloc. With more than 25 countries seeking entry, the alliance’s expansion in 2024 could shape the global economic landscape for years to come.
