A Nigerian Cambridge scholar, Mkpouto Pius, harshly criticized a Nigerian man who objected to her statement that 98% of Nigerian men cannot be like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s husband.
Pius had posted on social media to celebrate the 70th birthday of Mr. Okonjo-Iweala, the husband of the World Trade Organization’s Director-General. In her post, she praised him for supporting his wife’s achievements and used the opportunity to challenge Nigerian men to reflect on how they support their own wives’ aspirations.
She argued that many Nigerian men suffer from deep-seated inferiority complexes and are unable to support a successful woman without feeling threatened. Pius wrote:
“Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala celebrated her 70th birthday yesterday and Nigerian alpha males took that as an opportunity to advise women as usual, telling us that you can be married and still achieve your dreams. But how many of you can marry a woman who is far more well-known than you and support her quietly from the background? Very few. Most men suffer from an inferiority complex and can’t handle their wives’ success.”
She continued, explaining how demanding it is to pursue high-level academic and professional goals, implying that supportive partners are essential for such achievements.
A Nigerian man, Ikenna Nwaogwugwu, criticized her post, claiming it demeaned women and suggested they lack self-esteem. In response, Pius pointed out that Ikenna’s inability to understand her perspective reflected poorly on his intelligence and attributed this to his education at Abia State University (ABSU).
She concluded her argument by emphasizing the importance of men supporting their partners and allowing them the freedom to express themselves fully.
