A medical doctor named Wales has cautioned Nigerians against consuming rotten tomatoes and peppers, locally known as ‘eesa’ or ‘baaje’ tomatoes. In a widely circulated video on social media, Wales highlighted the serious health risks associated with eating these spoiled vegetables, attributing them to the presence of harmful microorganisms like fungi that produce mycotoxins.
Displaying a plate of rotten tomatoes, the doctor emphasized that despite economic hardships, eating such compromised produce should not be an option due to its potential to cause cancer.
“Fellow Nigerians, good morning. I understand that due to the economy, many are cutting costs. However, if you come across these items (rotten tomatoes and peppers) in the market, please avoid them.”
He further explained that fresh tomatoes are rich in Vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants, whereas rotten tomatoes are soft, decayed versions often sold at lower prices to economically vulnerable consumers. These tomatoes are susceptible to contamination by flies, which deposit germs and eggs inside them. Moreover, the infiltration of microorganisms, particularly fungi that produce mycotoxins, accelerates their decay.
“Mycotoxins are particularly concerning as they not only contribute to cancer risk but also pose threats to kidney and liver health. Simply boiling or washing these tomatoes does not eliminate these toxins, which permeate throughout the fruit due to its high water content.”
Wales urged the public to prioritize their health over economic considerations, emphasizing the dangers posed by consuming these compromised vegetables.
