Nigerian Government Dismisses Reports Of Mass Detention Of Citizens By Libya After CAF Verdict

The Federal Government has refuted claims of mass arrests and harassment of Nigerians living in Libya following a recent ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that favored Nigeria.

CAF awarded the Super Eagles of Nigeria additional points and imposed a $50,000 fine on Libya for the mistreatment of the Nigerian team during a Nations Cup Qualifying Match.

In the wake of this ruling, reports surfaced alleging that Nigerians in Libya faced harassment. Some Libyan news outlets even called for increased taxes on Nigerians to cover the fine imposed on the Libyan football team. Additionally, some Nigerians claimed they had been arrested.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured that Nigerians are safe in Libya. The ministry emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens in the country.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to state that, as of the time of this announcement, Nigerians in Libya are conducting their daily activities without any harassment from Libyan authorities following the CAF ruling that criticized the Libyan Football Association for their treatment of the Nigerian team and officials during the Nations Cup Qualifying Match.

The Ministry reaffirms that the well-being of Nigerian citizens worldwide remains a top priority for the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the government will continue to work diligently to protect it,” the statement said.
