The outage was attributed to a system failure from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which has been grappling with ongoing maintenance challenges. Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) reported the disruption around 2:00 p.m., informing its customers of the outage.
“We experienced a system outage today, 07/03/2025, at 14:00 hours, affecting supply within our network. Restoration of supply is currently underway in collaboration with our critical stakeholders,” IKEDC announced.
Eko Electricity Distribution Company also confirmed the situation, explaining that the reduced power allocation from TCN was aimed at maintaining grid stability, which led to unavoidable load shedding across its network.
Despite the ongoing disruption, both distribution companies assured customers that efforts were being made to restore electricity with the help of key partners.
However, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah denied reports of a system collapse, stating that power was still available where she was located. “We have light here now. What’s wrong with these people now?” she remarked when informed about the outage. When presented with a notice from one of the DisCos, she responded, “Three hours ago? Please send it to me.”
Nigeria’s power sector continues to face persistent issues, and despite several government-led reforms, progress remains slow. This latest blackout marks the third nationwide outage of 2025, following a previous collapse on February 12.
