In an exclusive interview on Channels Television on Sunday, January 14, Utomi shed light on the collaborative effort of these prominent politicians, emphasizing that the envisioned political entity transcends personal ambitions. According to Utomi, the focus is squarely on the welfare of Nigeria and its citizens.
He highlighted the need for a fresh start in Nigeria’s political landscape, asserting that the country has not had a true political party since 1999. Utomi expressed concerns about the deteriorating quality of life for Nigerians and the failure of previous political platforms to align with the people’s interests.
Utomi underscored the critical importance of building a political structure that genuinely addresses the needs of the Nigerian people, drawing a comparative analysis between Nigeria and India’s progress since 1999. He argued that while India has made significant strides in development, Nigeria has experienced a decline, becoming the poverty capital of the world.
Addressing the speculation on the potential presidential candidate for this new coalition, Utomi clarified that discussions are currently centered on defining the party’s values, policies, and a national strategy. He emphasized the necessity of creating a political party that transcends personal interests and focuses on the collective well-being of Nigerians.
Reflecting on the challenges faced by existing political parties, Utomi criticized the lack of coherent public policy discussions and the absence of a clear developmental state focus. He cited personal experiences with the All Progressives Congress (APC), highlighting a lack of response to his numerous letters as evidence of a party more focused on state capture than the welfare of the people.
In conclusion, Utomi called for a shift in focus from elections to the broader goal of making Nigeria work for everyone. He stressed the importance of creating a political party that fosters consensus on problem-solving, with leaders who prioritize the greater good over personal gains. The envisioned coalition aims to bring fresh perspectives to Nigerian politics, focusing on productivity and national development.
