This comes after the Supreme Court, on Friday, April 4, 2025, overturned an Appeal Court ruling that had recognized Abure as the LP’s national chairman.
The ruling was praised by Nenadi Usman, Chair of the LP caretaker committee, along with 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and the LP’s House of Representatives caucus.
However, in a statement issued on Sunday, April 6, 2025, the party’s National Secretary, Umar Ibrahim, accused the NLC of organizing its members, hired thugs, and miscreants in collaboration with the Usman-led committee and the national transition committee (NTC) to seize the LP national secretariat on Monday.
Ibrahim claimed that the NLC intended to steal sensitive documents and vandalize party property.
He warned that any effort to undermine Abure’s leadership would be strongly resisted, urging the police and other security agencies to prevent any disturbances at the party’s secretariat.
The statement reads, “We consider this action to be irresponsible, and it poses a significant threat to the peace of the Federal Capital Territory, showing clear desperation from the NLC.”
“It is important to highlight that the Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 5, 2025, is clear and unequivocal. The judgment simply requires political parties to resolve their crises internally, emphasizing that leadership matters are the internal affairs of political parties.”
“There is nothing in the ruling that empowers the NLC, the National Caretaker Committee, or any other group to assume control of the Labour Party’s leadership.”
“The leadership of the Labour Party is intact, and Barrister Julius Abure, who was legitimately elected during a convention in March 2024, remains the National Chairman of the Labour Party.”
