Kanu shared this optimism during a visit from the President-General of the Igbo Community Association (ICA), Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja, where he is currently held. Following the visit, Ezenekwe issued a statement highlighting Kanu’s remarks. He revealed that the IPOB leader voiced his disappointment over the lack of strong Igbo leadership and emphasized the need for continued advocacy on behalf of the region.

Ezenekwe was surprised by Kanu’s upbeat attitude despite his circumstances, noting that Kanu appeared to be in good health and had even gained weight during his time in detention.

The statement read: “Today (Wednesday), I had the privilege of visiting Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at the DSS headquarters in Abuja. Despite his situation, he appeared in good health and was remarkably resilient.

“He reiterated his call for a referendum, stressing its importance for self-determination, and affirmed that his only ‘crime’ was encouraging our people to awaken from their complacency.

“He expressed confidence, stating that he is following his prescribed treatment and is in high spirits.

“Most notably, Kanu shared his disappointment at the lack of strong leadership within the Igbo community, which has caused our voice to diminish at a critical time.”

Kanu expressed complete trust in his legal team and reaffirmed his belief that he would be released by the end of April 2025, highlighting his unwavering commitment and resilience.

Ezenekwe emphasized that the visit served as a reminder of the shared struggle for justice, recognition, and the advancement of Igbo interests in Nigeria.

He also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to take action for Kanu’s release, believing that it would reflect the president’s commitment to justice.

“Reflecting on today’s meeting, I make a heartfelt appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I urge him to draw on the spirit of democracy and justice that guided his own fight and take decisive steps to secure the release of our brother and hero, Nnamdi Kanu. Let this moment mark a turning point—a renewal of our collective resolve to protect the rights, dignity, and future of the Igbo people,” he concluded.
