This rebuttal from Onanuga comes in response to rumors that gained traction on social platforms, fueled by the recent move of some departments under the Ministry of Aviation’s Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to Lagos. Onanuga clarified on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle that these rumors initially emerged during the 2023 general elections campaign and were promptly dismissed.
According to Onanuga, “President Tinubu has no plan whatsoever to move the Federal Capital to Lagos. The rumor first surfaced during the campaign last year by opponents looking for all manners of weapons to stop him. We trashed it.”
He pointed out that those resurrecting the rumor are acting in a dishonest manner, driven by ethnic and regional motives to gain attention. Onanuga emphasized the permanence of Abuja as the capital, supported by existing laws.
Regarding the relocation of FAAN’s department to Lagos, Onanuga asserted that this does not equate to moving the entire FCT to Lagos. He explained that the move is administrative and aligns with the nature of Lagos as the commercial capital and the central hub for aviation business in Nigeria. He clarified, “FAAN should be nowhere else but near the industry it regulates. FAAN will still maintain some presence in Abuja, as it is not a wholesale movement.”
Onanuga also addressed the transfer of some CBN departments to Lagos, emphasizing that it should not be cause for concern. He argued that these departments work directly with commercial banks headquartered in Lagos, and regulatory bodies should be in close proximity to the businesses they oversee.
He cautioned against politicizing administrative decisions, stating, “All those pushing this campaign of falsehood know they are playing politics, albeit a dangerous politics to pit the North against the South.” Onanuga urged a halt to divisive politics and emphasized the need to refrain from creating unfounded rumors that distract from broader issues and undermine the administration led by a Southerner.
