Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the Director of Publicity and Advocacy for NEF, expressed apprehension regarding the potential consequences of the relocation. He highlighted that the move would incur substantial financial investment as the CBN would need to allocate funds for establishing new offices, acquiring or leasing properties, relocating staff, and meeting other infrastructural requirements. Such financial commitments could strain the CBN’s budget, diverting resources from essential functions and initiatives.

Suleiman pointed out that relocating key departments to Lagos might lead to a loss of skilled employees who may be unwilling or unable to move. This potential brain drain could have a detrimental impact on the CBN’s efficiency and performance. Additionally, the relocation could result in increased costs, reduced coordination, regional economic disparities, and impaired economic development in northern Nigeria.

The NEF statement suggested that the transition to Lagos would necessitate a period of adjustment for employees, potentially causing delays in decision-making and implementation as they adapt to their new surroundings. Overall, the NEF urges the CBN to carefully consider the potential repercussions of such a relocation before making any decisions that could negatively impact the bank and its functions.
