In a letter dated December 5, 2024, and signed by NANNM Secretary Oloruntoba Odumosu, the union expressed frustration over the Lagos State Government’s failure to address their demands regarding the adjustment of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS). The union condemned the government’s selective implementation of the salary adjustment, which has been applied only to doctors under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), while leaving out other health professionals.
“The government’s approach of implementing the adjustment exclusively for doctors and ignoring other health workers is unacceptable,” NANNM stated.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) has also expressed dissatisfaction with the delayed implementation of the 25% CONHESS adjustment. In a letter from its State Secretary, Kabiawu Kamaldeen, NUAHP called for unity and action, urging members to remain resolute in their fight for the adjustment.
“The notice serves as a call for mobilization and readiness. Let us stand firm for a positive outcome,” the letter read.
Other unions, including the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) and the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), have also voiced their concerns. JOHESU emphasized that despite the crucial roles health workers play in delivering quality care, the government has remained unresponsive to their legitimate demands, undermining their morale.
A joint congress of the unions is set for Monday, December 9, 2024, at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital to strategize further actions. MHWUN has urged its members to remain united and push for the full implementation of the CONHESS adjustment for all health workers.
The strike highlights ongoing grievances within the healthcare sector over salary disparities and unfulfilled government commitments.
