Former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Obong Victor Attah, emphasized the challenges Nigeria faces in effectively promoting itself to the global community for investment and export opportunities. Speaking at the 2024 investiture ceremony of the Institute of Certified Sales Professionals in Ikeja, Lagos, themed “Fostering the art of being outstanding,” Attah delved into the necessity of improving Nigeria’s image and marketing strategies post-2023 elections.
In his address titled “The imperative of selling Nigeria to the outside world in the post-2023 national elections era,” Attah lamented the detrimental effects of negative campaigning during the 2023 presidential election, which overshadowed discussions on governance plans. He highlighted the pivotal role of Nigeria’s leaders, particularly the President, as the nation’s primary ambassadors, stressing the need for balanced portrayals that highlight strengths alongside weaknesses.
Attah expressed concerns about the erosion of Nigeria’s reputation, citing instances where international trade relations suffered due to perceived lack of patriotism and poor interpersonal relations among citizens. He criticized the tendency for official trips, including those by state governors and federal officials, to devolve into frivolous excursions with minimal tangible outcomes.
Furthermore, Attah underscored the significance of diversifying Nigeria’s exports beyond crude oil, pointing out the nation’s diminished prominence in the agricultural sector. He emphasized the importance of professionalism and patriotism in marketing Nigeria’s offerings to the world, cautioning against presenting damaged products on the global stage.
Dr. Dele Sobowale, a Vanguard newspaper columnist, echoed Attah’s sentiments, advocating for a professional and strategic approach to promoting Nigeria internationally. Arthur Ozoigbo, President of the Institute of Certified Sales Professionals, highlighted the vital role of salesmanship in national development, emphasizing the need to leverage professional sales expertise for the country’s benefit.
Bukunmi Fabelurin, the institute’s Registrar, affirmed its commitment to enhancing professionalism among salespersons to contribute effectively to Nigeria’s economic growth.
In conclusion, Attah was honored as the Chief Patron of the institute, signifying his dedication to advancing the cause of professional salesmanship in Nigeria. The event served as a platform to discuss critical issues surrounding Nigeria’s image projection and economic diplomacy in the global arena.
