Ohanaeze Calls On Tinubu To Release Nnamdi Kanu, Says His Case Goes Beyond Legal MattersA former Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dimm Uchechukwu Okwukwu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), arguing that such a move would elevate the President to the status of a national hero. In an open letter, Okwukwu stated that Kanu’s continued detention is causing unrest in the Southeast and that the matter transcends the courtroom, urging Tinubu to exercise executive discretion to bring the issue to a close.

Okwukwu’s letter begins with a message of support for President Tinubu, recognizing his efforts to manage the complex affairs of the nation. He stressed that resolving the issue of Nnamdi Kanu is vital to the President’s success and legacy.

“I write this open letter to Your Excellency as a patriot and someone who desires your administration to succeed,” Okwukwu said. “Having observed your outstanding efforts in leading the country, I believe there is one critical factor that will greatly contribute to the stability of your administration, and that is the issue of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

Okwukwu went on to explain that while Kanu’s case is still under judicial review, it should not be viewed solely as a legal matter. “The issue is more political than legal,” he asserted. “It lies within the executive powers of the President to resolve it, rather than leaving it exclusively to the courts.”

He argued that Kanu’s release would bring significant benefits, especially to the Southeast, which has been deeply affected by the prolonged crisis. “The release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will bring peace and stability to the Southeast and free up law enforcement resources that are currently focused on the region. These resources could then be redirected to combat more pressing issues like banditry and terrorism in Northern Nigeria,” Okwukwu said.

In closing, Okwukwu urged President Tinubu to act swiftly and decisively: “I strongly and respectfully urge Your Excellency to direct that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu be released unconditionally or under terms that you deem appropriate. This action will not only resolve a national issue but also pave the way for greater peace and unity.”

He concluded by thanking the President for his consideration, assuring him of his continued respect for his leadership.
