The 32-year-old defender confirmed his decision on Thursday, concluding a career that saw him earn 83 caps, score eight goals, and appear in two Africa Cup of Nations finals. His retirement comes just days before Nigeria kicks off their 2025 AFCON campaign in Morocco.

Reacting to the news, Osimhen took to to express his gratitude to Troost-Ekong, describing him as a mentor both on and off the pitch.

Iwobi echoed the sentiment in an interview with SportyTV, revealing the emotional atmosphere in the camp following the announcement.

“Obviously, it is a sad moment for us because he has been such a key part of our team. But I wish him well—he is a brother and has contributed immensely to Nigeria and to me personally,” the Fulham midfielder said.

Iwobi also highlighted Troost-Ekong’s influence beyond his playing time in recent months.

“Towards the end of his Nigerian career, he wasn’t playing as much as he probably would have liked, but he remained vital to our team. His leadership, his voice, and his efforts to keep the squad united were invaluable,” Iwobi noted.
