Governor Ademola Adeleke had announced the deployment of 19 buses, named “Imole Bus,” on November 21, 2023, aimed at providing affordable transportation for Osogbo residents in the wake of increased fuel prices. The buses were intended to serve civil servants, students, and the poorest residents, with token fares contributing to the vehicles’ maintenance.

The government explained that previous buses, used during the tenure of former governor Rauf Aregbesola, incurred substantial expenses amounting to N25,274,288 million for necessary repairs to ensure roadworthiness for the new services.

The statement clarified that Osogbo had five assigned buses, while Ede, Iwo, Ikirun, Ife/Modakeke, and Ilesha had varying allocations. Two additional buses were kept on standby for unforeseen contingencies.

Although the buses commenced operations at a reduced fare of N50 compared to commercial intra-city minibusses, observations by Sunday Sun revealed their absence from the roads since December. The buses were found parked in front of the Ministry of Works and Transport at the State Secretariat in Abere.

An anonymous source suggested that insufficient revenue led to the withdrawal of the buses, making maintenance financially challenging.

Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Sesan Oyedele, explained that the buses were temporarily off the roads due to a lack of passengers, emphasizing the government’s intention to resume services in Osogbo, Ede, and Ife, with plans to extend to other towns in the future.
