In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, Agbese addressed skepticism about the recently announced 50 percent salary cut for legislators. He emphasized that the reduction is a genuine effort to address the nation’s economic challenges.
Agbese explained that the motion for the salary cut, proposed by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, reflects the parliament’s commitment to reducing their own financial burdens as a gesture of solidarity with the people. He stated, “Hardships are universal, and as a parliament, we are dedicated to tackling these issues comprehensively.”
He further assured that the 50 percent salary cut is not merely symbolic but part of a broader strategy to address national issues. “We are committed to ensuring that this will be the last time we discuss palliative measures in the country. We are prepared to work tirelessly to overcome these difficulties,” Agbese added.
Beyond the salary reduction, Agbese mentioned that the House is pursuing various empowerment initiatives through constituency projects to support agriculture, businesses, and education. He underscored that the decision to cut salaries stems from a place of patriotism and genuine concern for the country’s well-being.
Agbese dismissed doubts about the sincerity of the salary cut, asserting that such measures are a reflection of the legislators’ dedication to improving the lives of Nigerians. “When interventions are made, their effects will be visible,” he said, highlighting the importance of tangible actions to combat national hardships.
