Over 300 Students Abducted in Northern Nigeria; Troop Withdrawal Under Investigation.
The Nigerian military has launched an investigation into reports that troops stationed at a school in Kebbi State were withdrawn shortly before an attack that resulted in the abduction of students. At least 25 students of Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, and 303 students of St. Maryās Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State, were abducted last week. In a separate incident in Kwara State, three worshippers were killed, and a pastor, along with several others, was kidnapped during an attack at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku.
The incidents have provoked widespread condemnation from local and international observers, prompting President Bola Tinubu to cancel his scheduled trips to attend the G20 Summit in South Africa and the AUāEU Summit in Angola.
The DHQ strongly condemned the attacks and assured that the military is prioritizing the rescue of the abductees. In a statement, the military said it is reviewing troop deployment records in Kebbi to clarify the circumstances surrounding the alleged withdrawal prior to the attack.
Acknowledging growing concerns over insecurity in the northern states, the military emphasized its commitment to working closely with state authorities, community leaders, and other security agencies to protect schools and vulnerable communities. āThe safe return of the abducted students is our top priority,ā the DHQ said, adding that troops are actively pursuing all actionable intelligence.
