At least 15 individuals, including women and children, are reportedly unaccounted for following an assault by suspected vigilante personnel on an 18-seater bus traveling from Zaki/Biam in Benue State to Maihura in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State on Tuesday.

The incident transpired at Gankwe village along the Donga-Mararaban-Baissa road in the Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The bus driver, Mr. Mpuuga Mbaave, who narrowly escaped with machete wounds, recounted the ordeal to journalists. He disclosed that armed individuals in vigilante attire attacked the bus.

“I had loaded 18 passengers from Zaki/Biam in Benue State to Maihura in Taraba state, and as we approached Mararaba, I noticed several people in vigilante uniforms. Sensing trouble, I parked the vehicle.

“One of the villagers informed me to proceed, explaining that two vigilante members were killed by kidnappers, and the vigilante had come to retrieve their bodies.

“As I approached, some vigilante personnel began shouting, ‘kill all of them,’ blaming the passengers, who were predominantly Tiv, for the death of their colleagues. They attacked the passengers, ordering them out of the bus and forcing them to lie facedown. I hesitated to come down but eventually jumped out of the bus when the situation escalated. My conductor and I were pursued, sustaining machete cuts, but we managed to escape for our lives,” he narrated.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Donga Local Government Council, Hon. Ezra Voka, reported being in the nearby forest searching for the missing persons.

“I am already in the bush in search of the missing people. We cannot talk much now until I get more information from here,” he stated.

The incident raises concerns about the safety and security of travelers in the region, prompting authorities to intensify efforts to locate the missing individuals and address the underlying issues leading to such attacks.
