Reflecting on the match, Guardiola acknowledged that his side was vulnerable in transition, and commended Al Hilal for their pace and clinical finishing.
“When the crosses came in, especially early on, they were able to break forward quickly — they have very fast players,” Guardiola told reporters post-match.
“We created many chances against a team that defends deep, but they punished us on the break.”
Meanwhile, Al Hilal manager Simone Inzaghi praised his players for their heroic performance, describing the win over the reigning FIFA Club World Cup champions as a monumental achievement.
“We knew beating Manchester City would require something extraordinary, and that’s exactly what the team delivered tonight,” Inzaghi said.
“It felt like climbing Mount Everest without oxygen. But the boys were simply magnificent in every aspect — both in possession and when defending.”
With this victory, Al Hilal advances to the semi-finals, where they will face Brazilian side Fluminense on Friday, July 4. Notably, Fluminense booked their place after a stunning 2-0 win over European powerhouse Inter Milan.
