Peter Obi: Nigeria’s Judiciary Susceptible To Influence From Executive And Highest Bidder....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has voiced concerns about the current state of Nigeria’s judicial system, alleging that it is being compromised by both the executive and the highest bidder. Speaking at the Justice Anthony Aniagolu’s Memorial Lecture hosted by Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, Obi highlighted the need for a robust and independent judiciary.

During his lecture titled “The Judiciary and the Future of Nigeria,” the former Governor of Anambra State reminisced about a time when the judiciary boasted of incorruptible judges. He recounted his personal experience of contesting election results in Anambra State and seeking justice through the courts after being declared the loser. Obi emphasized that while the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) might not be the primary issue, the judiciary’s integrity is paramount, as it serves as the last resort for those seeking redress.

Obi lamented the weakening of the judiciary due to its susceptibility to influence from the executive and those with financial power. He stressed that a strong judiciary is essential for combating criminality and upholding the rule of law, which forms the bedrock of societal development. Emphasizing the pivotal role of an independent judiciary in fostering businesses, investments, and democracy, Obi called for urgent measures to restore its integrity and independence.

In essence, Peter Obi’s remarks underscore the critical need to safeguard the independence of the judiciary to ensure the continued progress and stability of Nigerian society.
