Tayo Shittu, the Chairman of the Computer Dealer Association in Computer Village, revealed that approximately 300 policemen, accompanied by three bulldozers, executed the demolition, impacting both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the plaza. Shittu expressed dissatisfaction, emphasizing the absence of prior dialogue and the unexpected nature of the demolition, leaving over 300 shops and more than 1,000 occupants affected.
One shop owner, Emeka, reported the loss of valuable goods, including air conditioning systems, inverters, solar panels, burglary items, and laptops. He lamented the lack of appreciation from the government, which had recently collected taxes from the traders, and the detrimental impact on employment for many Lagosians.
Despite the traders’ previous appeal to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, seeking intervention to prevent the rumored demolition, the operation proceeded. Last week, officials of the Lagos State Government, accompanied by armed policemen, had allegedly given a 24-hour ultimatum for the traders to vacate the plaza, a move resisted by the occupants.
The Lagos State Government, however, distanced itself from the demolition, attributing it to the Police Officers’ Wives Association, the owner of the structure. The government accused those spreading false information of divisive motives, emphasizing that it played no role in the demolition.
The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Sanwo-Olu, Gboyega Akosile, and the Lagos State Task Force spokesperson, Raheem Gbadeyanka, could not be reached for comments. The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, affirmed the scheduled demolition of the complex, reiterating the property’s ownership by the Police Officers’ Wives Association.
