According to the police spokesperson, Chidi Nwabuzor, preliminary investigations indicate that the teenager had previously threatened his father’s life due to financial expectations from Amnesty International, which he believed his father had received.

“On July 15, 2024, around 09:00 hours, the Ugboha Divisional Police Officer received a report of a shallow grave discovered behind the residence where Arthur Angel Jr. resided with the deceased,” Nwabuzor stated.

Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers uncovered the shallow grave and subsequently exhumed the body of Arthur Angel Sr., 70, noting a severe injury to the back of his head. The body was transported to the Uromi Hospital mortuary for further examination.

“The investigation revealed that Arthur Angel Jr. allegedly used a sledgehammer to fatally strike his father while he slept, suspecting that his father had received the money he had been anticipating,” Nwabuzor added.

Arthur Angel Sr., renowned for his advocacy against the death penalty and his international human rights work through the Life Wire International Foundation, had reportedly faced challenges in the past, including a wrongful conviction that led to a nine-year stint on death row.

Arthur’s cousin, Michael Ihaza, confirmed the tragic incident but expressed uncertainty about any specific conflicts Arthur might have had. He emphasized that Arthur’s son, who reported the incident to the police, has been taken into custody for questioning.

“Our late uncle was a dedicated advocate for justice and humanity. He was involved in various humanitarian causes and had no known personal disputes,” Ihaza remarked. “The police are conducting a thorough investigation, and we trust that justice will prevail.”

Arthur Angel Jr. has been transferred to the Edo State Criminal Investigation Department’s homicide section as investigations into the case continue.
