The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced on Wednesday that 35,000 police officers would be deployed for the upcoming Edo State governorship election on September 21. Along with this, 8,000 personnel from other security agencies, such as the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), will assist in maintaining order.
Egbetokun also confirmed that security aides assigned to VIPs would be withdrawn to ensure fairness and neutrality throughout the election. This announcement was made during a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which also featured INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu. During the event, it was revealed that former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, would oversee the signing of a peace agreement between the competing political parties and their candidates.
The meeting was attended by representatives from 17 political parties, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), civil society groups, and representatives from the Oba of Benin’s palace.
In his address, Egbetokun reiterated the suspension of activities of quasi-security organizations, including the Edo State Security Network (ESSN), emphasizing that they would not play any role on election day. He also listed various election-related offenses and warned that violators would be held accountable under the law.
He stated, “It is the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure peaceful elections, and the police, supported by other security agencies, will ensure the safety of everyone involved. We have taken several measures, including touring high-risk areas, engaging stakeholders, and conducting operational visits, and we will continue to work with all parties.”
Egbetokun further emphasized that all entry and exit points in the state would be secured, and movement would be restricted between 6 am and 6 pm on election day. He urged political leaders to caution their members against any form of violence.
