Governor Nwifuru had suspended 25 commissioners and 60 other government officials, including Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants, and Permanent Secretaries, for failing to attend an official government function.
In a statement personally signed and issued on Saturday in Abakaliki, Okike-Uzor strongly criticized opposition figures for spreading misinformation and misleading the people of Ebonyi State.
He clarified that the suspension had nothing to do with non-attendance at a birthday party, contrary to narratives circulating online.
“Opposition elements have flooded social media with falsehoods, twisting the truth about the official function that led to the suspension of some state officials, myself included,” the statement read.
“Some claim it was a birthday celebration, while others spin different versions to suit their mischief. These claims are entirely false. The suspension was not because of a birthday, as falsely portrayed online.”
He stressed that the governor holds the sole authority to determine what constitutes an official engagement.
“It was an unfortunate case of bad timing for some of us, but the truth is, many EXCO members have formed the habit of skipping official functions—even after the governor had urged us repeatedly to participate actively in state affairs,” he noted.
He went further to criticize the conduct of some cabinet members who either arrive late or leave early during events, even while the governor is still present.
“It is against government protocol for officials to arrive after the governor is seated, or to walk out while he is still at the venue. Unfortunately, some who are usually present at events were caught in this instance, but we must accept the consequences because we were in the wrong.”
