Amidst a surge in electricity tariffs and soaring fuel costs, Nigeria’s elite electricity consumers, identified as Band A customers, are increasingly embracing solar power as a viable alternative. This shift follows a drastic increase in electricity prices, which reportedly escalated by over 300% since April due to the government’s withdrawal of subsidies for electricity in Band A feeders.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) revised the tariff for Band A consumers to N225 per kilowatt-hour in April, up from the previous rate of N68. Although a slight reduction to N206.80/kWh was implemented in May, dissatisfaction among consumers persists, with organized labor and other stakeholders advocating for a return to the initial N68/kWh tariff.
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, contends that reverting the tariff is impractical, asserting that it would plunge the nation into darkness permanently. He argues that the tariff adjustment is essential to attract investment and inject liquidity into the power sector, a viewpoint not universally embraced.
Critics highlight that the tariff hike disproportionately impacts not only affluent individuals but also many low-income earners residing within Band A feeder areas, including pensioners, civil servants, and small business owners. The escalated costs have compelled some consumers to significantly curtail their electricity consumption, adversely affecting their quality of life.
Oduro Oladunni, one affected resident, shared his plight, revealing how the tariff increase has inflated his household’s monthly electricity expenses. Similarly, Adesayo Sulaimon lamented the diminished affordability of electricity, which has necessitated significant budget adjustments
