Supporters of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, have argued that fairness and political balance require the presidency to remain in the southern region in 2027.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The position was made known by the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Yunusa Tanko, and the National Publicity Secretary of the Obi–Kwankwaso Movement, Justin Ijeh, who both maintained that zoning remains essential for equity and national stability.
Speaking in an interview, Tanko said the call for a southern presidency is based on the fact that the current administration is already led by a southern president, making it necessary, in his view, for succession to remain within the same region to complete the cycle.
He added that the arrangement would be fair and consistent with political balance, noting that Obi has also expressed willingness to serve only one term if given the opportunity.
Tanko further claimed that Obi enjoys widespread popularity across the country, especially among young Nigerians, describing him as a leading figure with strong public appeal.
He said public receptions during Obi’s movements show the level of support he commands nationwide.
On his part, Justin Ijeh defended zoning as a long-standing political practice in Nigeria aimed at promoting inclusion and fairness, even though it is not enshrined in the constitution.
He explained that while merit remains important in leadership selection, zoning helps maintain balance in a diverse country like Nigeria.
Ijeh added that respecting zoning arrangements could help reduce political tension, warning that ignoring such conventions may lead to unnecessary divisions in the country.
