The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, criticized the approval, labeling it as a display of financial recklessness and the pinnacle of profligacy. Ologunagba asserted that the move further supports the PDP’s stance on the Tinubu-led government being tainted by corruption, where officials engage in blatant and careless treasury-looting.
The statement from the PDP emphasized the audacity of such spending, especially at a time when the nation is grappling with acute food shortages, widespread hunger, and challenges arising from insufficient investment in food production, insecurity, and harsh economic policies. The PDP also highlighted the purported request by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) for an initial sum of N1.8 billion for the event, which was later reduced to N1 billion, with President Tinubu allegedly directing the SGF to commence with N500 million.
In response to the PDP’s allegations, the Presidency called for an investigation into the civil service structure to identify and remove “moles” loyal to the main opposition party, accusing them of leaking classified documents. The Presidency expressed concerns over the leaking of correspondences between the Office of the President and the SGF, considering it a vulnerability in the system.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, voiced the need for the Federal Government to address the issue of leaks and eliminate individuals within the government who may be leaking classified information. Onanuga attributed the leaks to the presence of fifth columnists within the government, allegedly acting on behalf of the opposition, and emphasized the importance of maintaining confidentiality in official communications.
An anonymous Presidency official defended the leaked memo, dismissing it as a routine request for funds necessary to run the government’s affairs. Despite the defense, the call for a National Assembly investigation remains, with the PDP maintaining its stance on the alleged financial recklessness within the government.
