Nigerian Activist and political commentator, Deji Adeyanju has lamented over the way President Buhari crippled Nigeria’s economy in the past eight years.
Let’s take a brief walk through PMB’s eight years in office;
President Buhari assumed office in 2015, inheriting an economy that was already struggling due to falling oil prices and declining government revenues. One of the major economic policies implemented by President Buhari’s administration was the restriction of foreign exchange for certain items, which led to a shortage of dollars and made it difficult for businesses to import essential goods. The policy was intended to encourage local production and reduce import dependence, but it resulted in a rise in inflation and a decline in foreign investment.
Another major policy was the increase in fuel prices and the removal of fuel subsidies, which sparked nationwide protests and led to an increase in transportation costs and inflation. CONTINUE READING
Furthermore, the administration’s foreign exchange policy created a disparity in the exchange rate between the official rate and the parallel market, which incentivized capital flight and made it difficult for businesses to plan and invest.
Overall, the Buhari administration’s economic policies have been criticized for being inconsistent, unpredictable, and lacking clarity. These factors, along with other issues such as insecurity and poor infrastructure, have contributed to the current economic situation in Nigeria.
Deji Adeyanju who was arrested and detained several times by the Nigerian government for his activism a few years back, took to his Twitter handle to lament over the falling economy and how he pity’s the incoming government.
In his words, he said:
“President Buhari destroyed Nigeria beyond recognition in 8yrs. It will take 40yrs to return the country back to the era of PDP economy of 2015. It is almost unbelievable that a dollar is N740. Inflation and economic indices so bad. I pity the president taking over on May 29th.”
With all these, the task ahead of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not going to be easy but is achievable if we come together as a nation and put tribalism, and ethnicism aside, we will see drastic growth in our country.
