This move fueled speculation that Nigeria’s application was declined due to a failure to meet specific membership criteria.
In a statement released in Abuja, Okechukwu, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), highlighted that Nigeria would be better served by adhering to its long-standing diplomatic stance of non-alignment.
Okechukwu underscored his satisfaction when Vice-President Kashim Shettima clarified the situation, stating, “We have not applied for BRICS membership.
This decision is largely influenced by the fact that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, my principal, is a dedicated democrat who values consensus-building.”
The VON Director General emphasized, “While there are no objections to Brazil, Russia, India, China, or our fellow nation South Africa, which constitute BRICS, Nigeria would derive substantial advantages from maintaining its traditional policy of multilateral diplomacy.”
He continued, “Historical records indicate that the BRICS consortium, composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and later South Africa, was established to foster economic development outside the Bretton Woods framework.
Curiously, the acronym was coined by Goldman Sachs in 2001, and in 2006, the same bank launched an equity fund catering to BRICS investors. Subsequently, the group established the New Development Bank (NDB).”
