The arrest was made in connection with Ebonyi’s deceptive practices, where he allegedly defrauded church members and other individuals by promoting a fictitious intervention project through his NGO, Theobarth Global Foundation. He claimed that the Ford Foundation was providing a grant of $20 million to support the less privileged in society, ultimately amassing a sum of N1,319,040,274.31.
Under the guise of facilitating the phony grant, Ebonyi convinced victims, including Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and individuals, to enroll as beneficiaries by paying for registration forms and clusters, each amounting to N1,800,000. This scheme resulted in the illicit accumulation of funds, victimizing unsuspecting Nigerians and NGOs nationwide.
EFCC investigations revealed that there was no legitimate arrangement, grant, or association between Ebonyi and the Ford Foundation. The Foundation explicitly disowned him and his NGO, asserting no affiliation with their activities. Additionally, the Commission identified five properties acquired by Ebonyi as proceeds from his fraudulent dealings.
Despite his arrest, Ebonyi allegedly continues to reach out to his subscribers through various social media platforms to promote his deceptive Ford Foundation grant. Pending the conclusion of investigations, he is expected to face charges in court.
