The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains unresolved as tensions over the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, escalate among the PDP Governors’ Forum. A senior member of the PDP National Working Committee, speaking anonymously, indicated that Damagum is backed by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and at least four other governors: Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), and Agbu Kefas (Taraba)…….CONTINUE READING
Meanwhile, the governors of Enugu and Zamfara, Peter Mbah and Dauda Lawal, are remaining neutral, while the other seven PDP governors are pushing for Damagum’s removal. The opposition to Damagum is led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, alongside Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Godwin Obaseki (Edo), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), and Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom).
Damagum has faced mounting criticism since taking over as acting National Chairman after Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s dismissal. His alignment with Wike during the controversial Rivers State PDP Congresses has intensified calls for his resignation, particularly after delaying a crucial National Executive Committee meeting from September 26 to October 24.
The conflict reached a boiling point on August 24, following a public endorsement of Fubara by several PDP governors, which Wike reacted to with threats of disrupting activities in other states. In response, the PDP Governors’ Forum condemned Wike’s remarks as irresponsible, while he reaffirmed his stance.
During a recent meeting in Bauchi, Mohammed suggested that the North Central region would propose a successor for Damagum. However, Makinde, an ally of Wike, publicly pledged support for Damagum, stating their commitment to repositioning the party.
According to sources, the governors from Enugu and Zamfara are remaining indifferent to the leadership turmoil, while others continue to rally around Wike and Damagum, solidifying their positions within the party. The situation remains dynamic, with the potential for further developments as factions vie for control.
