Reno Omokri Sparks Reactions With Claim That ₦3,000 Can Sustain Average Nigerian Daily

Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has sparked discussion after claiming that ₦3,000 could sustain an average Nigerian for one day.

Omokri made the statement while appearing on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he spoke about the rising cost of living in Nigeria and the interpretation of international poverty standards.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Omokri said his position was based on a personal market survey he conducted alongside a journalist. He explained that they visited a market without security personnel and examined the prices of basic food items, including yam, rice, maize and fruits.

Based on what he observed during the survey, Omokri argued that ₦3,000 could cover the daily needs of an average Nigerian, while acknowledging that the same amount would be insufficient to meet basic needs in countries such as the United States, where the cost of living is significantly higher.

He maintained that poverty assessments should take into account the economic realities and purchasing power of individual countries rather than relying solely on a uniform global standard.

Omokri also questioned how the World Bank’s global poverty benchmark of living on less than $2 per day should be interpreted across different economies. He argued that the value of such an amount varies depending on the prevailing cost of goods and services in each country.

He stressed that an amount considered inadequate in one country could have considerably different purchasing power elsewhere, insisting that context is important when assessing poverty and living standards.

His remarks have since drawn attention amid ongoing concerns over food prices, inflation and the financial pressure facing households across Nigeria.
