According to the ruling party, the appointed officials will oversee the conduct and coordination of the direct primary election across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Guidelines signed by the APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, and released to journalists on Thursday revealed that the presidential primary will be held across all 8,809 wards nationwide, with registered party members expected to vote for their preferred aspirants.

The APC confirmed that it has adopted the direct primary method for the presidential contest, allowing all registered members of the party to participate at the ward level.

Under the arrangement, voting will take place in each ward, after which results will be collated at the local government level before being forwarded to the state level for final aggregation.

The party also named prominent political figures as coordinators and collation officers in states currently governed by opposition parties. The move is seen as part of the APC’s strategy to place the management of the presidential primary process in those states under trusted party leaders rather than governors from rival parties.

For example, in Oyo State, where Governor Seyi Makinde belongs to the Peoples Democratic Party, the APC appointed Senator Teslim Folarin as state coordinator and collation officer.

Similarly, in Abia State, where Governor Alex Otti is a member of the Labour Party, the APC named Benjamin Kalu to oversee the exercise in the state.

The arrangement indicates that the APC intends to rely heavily on its own political structures and leaders in opposition-controlled states to supervise the primary process and result collation.

Among those appointed as coordinators and collation officers are prominent governors and political figures, including Hope Uzodimma for Imo State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu for Lagos State, Uba Sani for Kaduna State, and Siminalayi Fubara for Rivers State, among others.

The APC further explained that the state coordinators will appoint local government collation officers responsible for compiling results from wards across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.

Following the collation process at the local government level, state coordinators are expected to aggregate the results from their respective states and submit them to the Presidential Primary Election Committee in Abuja.

The party stated that the final state results will be formally presented to the Presidential Primary Election Committee on May 24, 2026.
