Residents of the Northwest have expressed their gratitude and satisfaction with the president’s initiative, emphasizing its importance for the region. Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris conveyed this sentiment during the official groundbreaking ceremony held in Gulumbe town, Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area.
Representing President Tinubu at the ceremony, Governor Idris highlighted the significance of the project, stating, “Mr. President, we thank you for your commitment to our great nation. This highway represents a vital corridor from the Northwest to Lagos and the Calabar Coastal Highway.”
He praised the president for his dedication to serving all Nigerians and expressed appreciation to members of the Federal Executive Council and the National Assembly for their roles in bringing this project to fruition. “Mr. President has not failed Nigerians,” he declared.
The governor reassured attendees that funds have been allocated to ensure the project proceeds without financial interruptions. The Sokoto-Badagry road, which spans 1,068 kilometers, was originally initiated during President Shehu Shagari’s administration in the 1980s and has now been revived after more than 40 years.
Minister of Works Dave Umahi described the project as a significant undertaking initially proposed to begin in Lagos. He noted that President Tinubu’s administration decided to commence work from Sokoto, appreciating the president’s visionary approach. Umahi stated that the first phase, involving the construction of 68 dams for irrigation, is expected to be completed within two years.
“These infrastructure projects are more than just roads; they represent substantial investments with high returns. The Sokoto-Badagry project will facilitate a major agricultural revolution through the development of irrigation systems and renewable energy,” he said.
Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, remarked that while campaigning, President Tinubu did not specifically promise to execute this project, he did commit to serving all Nigerians. Bagudu emphasized that the highway represents an investment for both current and future generations.
Senator Adamu Aliero (PDP, Kebbi Central), who chairs the Senate Committee on Works, commended President Tinubu for moving forward with a project that previous administrations had only promised. He praised Governor Nasir Idris for his transformative leadership in Kebbi State, stating, “Regardless of our political affiliations, Gov. Idris has brought about significant development.”
The Emir of Gwandu and Chairman of the Council of Chiefs in Kebbi, Maj Gen Muhammadu Iliyasu-Bashar (retd), also expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for reviving the project. He was represented at the ceremony by the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Muhammadu Samaila-Mera, who noted that President Tinubu’s efforts would leave a lasting legacy
