In a recent disclosure by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, the Nigerian Police Force has reported a surge in security challenges over the past seven weeks. During a meeting with Police Strategic Commanders to address the prevailing security situation, IGP Egbetokun outlined the broader picture of escalating crimes. In addition to the kidnappings and banditry, the police recorded 302 cases of murder, 111 cases of armed robbery attacks, and 35 cases of terrorism/secessionist attacks during the same period.
Egbetokun, however, pointed out some successes in the fight against crime. The Nigeria Police Force, implementing strategies formulated in previous conferences, made significant strides in curbing criminal activities. The police arrested 814 suspects involved in various crimes, rescued 107 kidnapped victims, and seized 166 firearms, along with ammunition and vehicles.
The IGP provided specific instances of successful operations in different states. These included the arrest of a notorious kidnap kingpin in the Bwari axis, the rescue of hostages in Nasarawa after a confrontation with a kidnapping syndicate, and the apprehension of individuals supplying arms and ammunition to bandits in Kaduna, Niger, and Zamfara States.
The report also highlighted interventions in various states, such as the arrest of criminals in Kogi, uncovering a cult group’s armory in Ogun, and the joint operation leading to the arrest of suspected kidnappers in Ekiti.
Furthermore, IGP Egbetokun emphasized the National Cyber Crime Centre’s successes in tackling cyber-related crimes. Notable achievements included the arrest and arraignment of suspects involved in financial security breaches amounting to millions of dollars and the recovery of assets, cash, and digital assets.
The IGP’s comprehensive briefing underscores the multifaceted efforts by the Nigerian Police Force to address the complex and evolving security challenges facing the nation.
