Emmanuel, associated with the Bori Area Command, was detained at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department of the State Police Command on the directive of Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu.

The incident was disclosed to the media in Port Harcourt by the teenager’s aunt, Love, on Saturday. Love recounted that she had sent the girl on an errand the previous Friday, but the girl did not return home that day, prompting her to initiate a search.

The teenager’s guardian revealed that the girl returned the following morning, Saturday, January 13, 2024, and upon questioning, she disclosed the harrowing experience of being held and assaulted by the police officer in his office at the Bori Area Command until dawn.

Love stated, “When she came back around 8 am the following day, I asked her where she was coming from and where she slept last night. She told me that one police officer with two stars at the Area Command held her in his office at the Area Command, Bori, and assaulted her until daybreak.”

According to Love, the officer had threatened the girl with violence if she raised an alarm, causing her to remain silent. The concerned aunt immediately reported the incident to the Bori Police Division, and the girl identified the officer before being taken to the hospital by the Investigating Police Officer at the police division.

Love added, “They now took her to their (police) hospital. The doctor on duty confirmed that there was penetration.”

Emmanuel was subsequently taken into custody by his colleagues and transported to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Port Harcourt, where he is currently detained. The distressed aunt is seeking justice for the teenager and insisted on a thorough investigation.

A rights group, Rainbow Watch And Development Centre, has also called for an impartial and comprehensive inquiry into the matter. Michael Gbarale, the Executive Director of the group, commended the Commissioner of Police for the arrest and urged that the case not be overlooked, emphasizing the importance of holding errant officers accountable.
