A combined team of security forces, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), on Wednesday, cleared suspected thugs from the headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja.
An insider, speaking anonymously for fear of victimization, told Punch that the thugs were allegedly hired to block members of the National Working Committee (NWC) from accessing the party’s headquarters for a scheduled meeting.
“With the support of security personnel, party staff confronted and dispersed the thugs,” the source disclosed.
Deepening PDP Leadership Tussle
The ongoing crisis within the PDP has further destabilized its leadership, with multiple factions claiming key positions.
The battle for the office of the National Secretary has intensified, with Samuel Anyanwu and former National Youth Leader Sunday Ude-Okoye both asserting their rights to the position.
While the Court of Appeal in Enugu upheld Ude-Okoye as the legitimate National Secretary, Anyanwu escalated the case to the Supreme Court, which has reserved judgment on the matter.
Amid heightened tensions, security forces were heavily deployed around the PDP national headquarters at Wadata Plaza, Wuse Zone 5. At least six security vans belonging to the Police, DSS, and NSCDC were stationed at the premises to prevent further disruptions.
Despite the leadership turmoil, Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum proceeded with the NWC meeting on Wednesday, with Ude-Okoye in attendance as the National Secretary.
