Command spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed the arrests in a message sent to Punch via WhatsApp, stating that the suspects are currently in custody while investigations continue.

“Yes, the command has arrested four suspects, and they are now in police custody as the investigation is still ongoing,” Kiyawa said.

The arrests come on the heels of an order by the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, who had earlier instituted a panel to probe the altercation between supporters of the dethroned 15th Emir of Kano, Bayero, and the reinstated 16th Emir, Sanusi II.

While Kiyawa withheld specific details about the identities of those arrested, he confirmed that law enforcement is working diligently to uncover the full circumstances of the unrest.

The confrontation reportedly occurred on Sunday near the Kofar Kudu gate when Emir Bayero’s convoy, returning from a condolence visit to the family of the late business tycoon Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, was allegedly blocked by youths believed to be loyal to Emir Sanusi.

Bayero was said to be heading toward the main palace through the contested route on his way to the Nassarawa mini palace when tensions flared.

The ongoing emirship crisis in Kano has escalated significantly since Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi II in May 2024, following the removal of Bayero and four other first-class emirs. Both Sanusi and Bayero have since operated from separate palaces, intensifying political divisions and sparking repeated confrontations among their supporters.
