Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, has emphasized the need for gender equality in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). During his speech on the occasion of this year’s International Day for Women and Girls in Science, themed “Women and Girls in Science Leadership — a New Era for Sustainability,” Nnaji acknowledged that despite progress, achieving gender equality in STEM remains a challenging objective. Calling for equality, Nnaji stressed that for the transformative potential of Science and Technology to be fully realized, every voice, irrespective of gender, must be acknowledged and valued. He reassured aspiring female scientists that their curiosity, intellect, and passion are significant today, not just in the future.
Nnaji urged women already making strides in the field of science to recognize the importance of mentoring others as they climb the ladder. He acknowledged that their mentorship, advocacy, and support could serve as inspiration for the next generation of female scientists to achieve greater heights.
The minister advocated for the creation of an empowering environment where every woman and girl feels encouraged to pursue their passion for discovery and exploration.
