In an official statement issued by the association, STOAN’s Chairperson, Princess Vicky Haastrup, conveyed warm congratulations to the former Osun State Governor on his appointment and inauguration as Nigeria’s inaugural Minister of Marine and Blue Economy.
“We are particularly delighted with the selection of His Excellency Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola as the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy. Given his impressive track record in governance and public service, coupled with his dedicated work ethic and unwavering pursuit of excellence, we hold a strong belief that he will redefine the Nigerian maritime sector to achieve its utmost potential,” Princess Haastrup affirmed.
The Chairperson of STOAN emphasized that the maritime industry harbors the capacity to generate an annual revenue exceeding a trillion dollars for the nation, contributing significantly to the government’s agenda of economic diversification and fostering numerous employment opportunities for Nigerians.
“Marine activities encompass navigation, nautical expertise, naval services, and maritime operations, while the Blue Economy encompasses all economic undertakings related to oceans, seas, and other aquatic bodies.
“The newly established Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy assumes responsibility for overseeing the holistic contribution of oceans, seas, and inland waterways to the Nigerian economy; ensuring the environmental and ecological sustainability of marine environments; and capitalizing on Nigeria’s aquatic resources to stimulate economic growth, enhance livelihoods, generate jobs, and safeguard the health of ocean ecosystems.
“Key facets of the Marine & Blue Economy comprise maritime transport and shipping, port administration, coastal tourism, fishing and aquaculture, sustainable energy sources, water purification, submarine cabling, underwater resource extraction, deep-sea mining, utilization of marine genetic resources, and biotechnology.
“Hence, the Ministry’s scope is exceedingly broad, offering substantial opportunities for advancement.
“We extend our gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for heeding the appeals of maritime operators, who underscored the necessity of a dedicated Ministry for the sector.
The appointment of His Excellency Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola also bolsters our confidence in the President’s commitment to expediting sectoral development.
“Aligned with the President’s vision, we assure the Federal Government and the Honourable Minister of our wholehearted support and resolute dedication.
All port terminal operators are firmly aligned with the Federal Government’s objectives to accelerate sectoral growth, enabling it to play an even more pronounced role in bolstering the national economy,” Princess Haastrup affirmed.
