In a statement released through his media adviser, Ike Abonyi, in Abuja on Tuesday, Secondus cautioned that the 2027 elections may not take place due to what he termed the APC’s intentional sabotage of democratic processes. His remarks followed the recent Edo State gubernatorial election, which he claimed was fraught with irregularities aimed at ensuring victory for the APC.
Secondus accused the ruling party of having “murdered and buried” democratic principles in Nigeria, pointing to violations of electoral laws and the disenfranchisement of voters as clear indicators of electoral fraud. He also highlighted similar instances of malpractice in other recent off-cycle elections, including those in Imo and Kogi states, criticizing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under Prof. Mahmood Yakubu’s leadership.
The former PDP chairman stated that INEC has shown no accountability for the flawed 2023 general elections, which he believes have undermined the democratic foundations of the country. He further criticized APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje for boasting that the “template” used in the Edo election would be replicated in upcoming elections in Ondo and Anambra states, suggesting that the APC is pursuing a dangerous agenda to establish a one-party state.
Secondus emphasized that the APC’s actions indicate a desire to silence dissenting voices and erode the checks and balances that are vital for a functioning democracy. “The beauty of democracy lies in opposing voices that help to check the ruling party, but the APC is intent on stifling Nigeria with their misrule and will not tolerate differing views,” he stated.
He warned, “Nigeria’s democracy is sitting on a keg of gunpowder because of rigging. If the Edo election results are upheld, it will be challenging to conduct future elections in Nigeria.” Secondus highlighted the manipulation observed in Edo, marked by the harassment of opposition leaders and the compromising of security agencies and electoral officials, as setting a troubling precedent for future elections. “The world is watching as we bring shame to this esteemed form of governance that other nations utilize to stabilize and develop their countries,” he concluded.
