In an interview with Channels TV on Tuesday, Matawalle said, “If they have any proof of my involvement, they should bring it forward.” He dismissed the allegations made by Governor Lawal as baseless, explaining that his past dialogues with bandits were actions taken by other governors as well.
Matawalle emphasized, “It’s not just me; governors from Niger and Sokoto states have also engaged in dialogues with bandits. Why am I being singled out? Zamfara is a complex state with individuals who harbor malicious intentions. I was the only governor who swore on the Holy Quran that I have no connection with banditry and that I disapprove of these activities. I challenged all politicians, including General Ali Gusau and Dauda Lawal, to do the same, but none accepted. Their refusal to take the oath suggests they might be involved.”
He concluded by reiterating that he has always acted in good faith, just like other governors who have engaged in dialogue with bandits, and lamented that he is unfairly targeted despite the collaborative efforts to address the banditry issue.
